Even though the effects are not well researched, the benefit of exposing children to art is a lot. Art is not just a creative outlet for kids but for adults alike. While it also serves as a healthy outlet for mental and emotional support for kids, here are 5 major reasons why art is an important part of life.

  • Art improves Academic Achievement
  • It is seen that students involved in the arts have tremendous academic benefits compared to students without exposure to the arts. Studies suggest that a student interested in the arts is four times likely to be recognized for academic achievement. That student is also three times more likely to win an award for school attendance. Involving kids in art, be it them attending classrooms or home schooling, helps students excel in life. Students with low-income students who are highly engaged in the arts are more than twice as likely to graduate as those with no art education.

  • Art improves Language and Thinking Skills
  • The brain of a kid develops faster with music. This is the case in the areas of the brain associated with language development and reading skills. Kids and young children learn words for colours and shapes as they are crafting something new. Similarly, it is recommended to continue the conversation with the kids about what they are building to improve their kid’s concentration skills. At the same time, it is an excellent opportunity to introduce new vocabulary words.

  • Art builds Confidence and Concentration.
  • When kids try new things, they develop their "self-regulation skills". Small examples include waiting for paint or glue to dry. This then helps them develop patience, which all kids need help with. Later, as kids develop art and music skills and improve those skills through repetition and practice, they build confidence resulting in higher self-esteem. By targeting kid’s concentration on a task, these activities instil a sense of achievement and allow kids to take pride in their work.

  •  Art develops Discipline, Self-Expression and Creativity
  • Art is an experience that requires free-thinking and experimenting. Both of these are subsets of creativity and allow children to decide to answer the right questions while expressing their genuine emotions. By committing to stick with lessons, art provides undeniable benefits like improving critical thinking skills to help them throughout their lives.

  • Art promotes Parent bonding
  • What better way than to do arts than do it together? You not only get to spend quality time bonding with kids but also create lifelong memories to cherish. If your child is home schooled or not, encouraging art is a great way to promote language learning, communication, and reading. There is no doubt that art inspires kids to excel in all areas of life and encourages them to improve their attitudes and academic performance.
